Biography

“Twelve songs. No samples. No triggers. No bullshit,” is how Greg Mackintosh (vocals/guitars) sums up what one can expect from the third album of VALLENFYRE, “Fear Those Who Fear Him”. “Instead you get crucifyingly loud amps, ferocious drumming, and vicious vocals spitting out hate and venom. Raw honest brutality. No conformity. No compromise.”

Whereas originally Mackintosh, best known as guitarist and founding member of UK gothic metal pioneers Paradise Lost, initiated VALLENFYRE back in 2010 as an outlet to actively deal with the death of his father, the band developed into a force of its own in the years to come. The debut “A Fragile King” (2011) turned out to be a heartfelt, cathartic and therapeutic release, while the second full-length, “Splinters” (2014), proved to be even more abrasive and extreme. Shows to audiences across Europe and America in support of that particular album honed the band into a bludgeoning live beast, and now album number three promises to be an even more intense affair.

Retaining the band’s trademark sound inspired by the likes of Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Autopsy, Antisect, Discharge, Nihilist, early Napalm Death, early Bathory, and Conflict, “Fear Those Who Fear Him” contains a dose of utterly grim doom monuments like ‘An Apathetic Grave’, ‘The Merciless Tide’ and ‘Cursed From The Womb’ as well as unapologetic two minute short attacks such as ‘Nihilist’, ‘Messiah’ or ‘Kill All Your Masters’. In between, the punishing groove of ‘Amongst The Filth’ and ‘Degeneration’ as well as crusty death metal assaults like ‘Soldier Of Christ’ or ‘Temple Of Rats’ wreak maximum sonic havoc. VALLENFYRE recorded “Fear Those Who Fear Him” as a three-piece in January 2017 seeing stalwarts Greg Mackintosh and Hamish Glencross (guitar / bass) joined by Waltteri Väyrynen (drums) in the comfortable surroundings of GodCity studio in Salem, MA. Again, Kurt Ballou (Converge, Black Breath, Nails) ensured the blistering, chainsaw-like guitar sound of “Splinters” was untouched whereas the entire album appears harsher, grittier, and more pissed off than its predecessors. “Most bands refine their sound over the first two or three albums. Becoming more technically adept and honing their craft,” Mackintosh comments the band’s most recent artistic development. “VALLENFYRE have done almost exactly the opposite. We have devolved, made things simpler and crush most of the melody under swathes of rotting noise. From “A Fragile King” to “Splinters” and now to “Fear Those Who Fear Him”, we have become more savage, rawer and less compromising!”

While the stark contrasts of its unforgiving musical mixture of death, doom, grind, and crust, seem to be more radical than before, Mackintosh however widened his lyrical perspectives from personal to global. “Songs like ‘Kill All Your Masters’ address the frustration and anger we feel towards the many people and regimes in positions of power, whether it be political, religious or corporate, inflicting crimes and injustices on an often docile and enslaved population, who in many ways seem happy to be told what to do by anything from ancient books to lifestyle magazines.” Uttering torrents of hatred towards those orchestrating the misery of many, articulating the desolate rage boiling inside each one of us, picturing a world in turmoil, dysfunctional, and despaired, “Fear Those Who Fear Him” strikes with an urgency and authenticity that is hard to resist.
Eager to take this ferocity to stages worldwide, where VALLENFYRE perform as a quintet completed by second guitarist Sam Kelly-Wallace and bassist Chris Casket, to allow Mackintosh to fully concentrate on his vocal performance, the band is more than ready to wash you away like the merciless aural tide that is “Fear Those Who Fear Him”.
