Optimizations to the festival grounds at W:O:A 2026 - This is what we have planned

Metalheads, we heard you – and we want to deliver!
In 4 months, the time has finally come: the Infield will once again be ceremonially opened, and the storming of the Holy Ground will begin.
For months, we’ve been working on further developing the festival grounds, and as every year we’ve naturally included your feedback in our planning. Today, we want to present the first measures, some of which are true innovations for W:O:A.
Floor panel system in front of the two main stages
We’re equipping the Infield with a large cover! A 10,000-square-meter area in front of the two main stages will be covered with solid panels. Something like this has never been done in Wacken before!
This is meant to ensure good ground conditions in the heavily used area in front of the Faster and Harder Stage—regardless of the weather—and at the same time protect the Holy Ground.
But that’s not all; there’s more news:
Expansion of reinforced pathways
This year, you’ll be able to cover up to 80 percent of the distance from your campsite to the Wacken Plaza on reinforced paths. Of the total 13.5 kilometers of reinforced pathways leading from the front area of the Infield (Wacken Plaza) to the various camping areas, 6.7 kilometers will be temporarily reinforced. That’s 3.7 kilometers more than in 2025. In addition, a new gravelled emergency route over 800 meters long is being planned on the grounds.
New lighting system for better orientation on the grounds
Color-coded string light sytems will mark the main routes, helping everyone navigate more easily. These routes will also be clearly shown on site maps and in the W:O:A app, aiming to increase the use of reinforced paths and reduce stress on additional unpaved routes.
Significant increase of temporary ground reinforcement in the “Wheels Of Steel” Camping Area
More than four times as many temporary ground and path reinforcements (including steel plates) are planned for our Wheels Of Steel area to significantly improve mobility there as well. We’re expanding to a total of roughly 3,500 square meters.
Beyond all this, we continue testing innovations that could sustainably improve the grounds and the festival. As you’ve already learned via our social media channels, we are currently testing hemp shives (the woody remains of hemp stalks) from a regional company. These could be used in addition to the familiar wood chips to improve the condition of muddy areas. Hemp shives can absorb up to 30 percent more moisture and could be removed from the grounds after the festival without leaving residue, to then be used sustainably as building material.
It's important to us to continuously optimize the festival, invest in different areas, and visibly develop it further for the fans this year as well. Every year the focus of our entire team is on giving our best for our guests, our Wacken family.
We’re really looking forward to this year’s anniversary and are going full throttle for it – rain or shine! Though preferably hope for more shine.
